Recently I came across this story on twitter that I felt compelled to share

A 500-pound black bear has been the source of more than 150 calls between law enforcement and wildlife personnel recently.

After reading the story, the headline is somewhat misleading. The authorities do not want to euthanize the bear and attempts are being made to relocate him to a wildlife sanctuary.

The bear has never attacked anyone, but he loves to EAT. He basically loves human food. He has been breaking into campsites, trashcans, even peoples houses looking for food.

The Bear has been Permabulking

In the bro world of fitness, of permabulking refers to when a guy sets out to gain weight muscle mass/gain weight...and never stops.

Eventually he ends up "fat jacked", or just plain fat.

Like this Bear that has not skipped meals in a very long time.

Its very easy to convince yourself that your weight gain is all muscle, when in reality at least half the weight you gain is bodyfat.

Bulking is a bit a misnomer itself, as no one becomes "Bulky" in only a few months

I get asked about "do I believe in bulking" quite often from younger guys. To answer a question with question, I ask them how they expect to gain weight without gaining weight.

The truth is that eating in slight calorie surplus DOES promote muscle growth, the body of evidence on this is quite clear.

Its also true that if you gain weight for too long a period of time, your bodyfat could eventually rise to a level of excess where you become overweight.

That does not make "bulking" a bad idea. Rather you need clear expectations for how LONG you plain to gain weight for, and have a reasonable cutoff point for when you decide to stop gaining weight.

Once you've made the decision to gain weight, how do you train?

This is where bodybuilding practice and wisdom comes into play

-Use multiple exercise
-Use moderate to high reps
-Train with moderate to high volume (total sets)

As you might imagine, I have a few programs that fit this criteria.

Such as the Overkill Program

This program is my most update and recent incarnation of a "mass gain" program. It is a straight bodybuilding, bro split training experience with high volume, "work the muscle from all angles" workouts, and my usual mix of insights into exercise selection, rep ranges, and sequencing.

The weekly schedule is reasonable: 4 days of lifting, 3 days of cardio. Plenty of time to recovery between sessions

The entire body is trained over the course of the week with a Leg day, Press Day, Pull Day, and Arm Day.

The workouts are long, the sets and reps extensive, and you get to enjoy the leaving the gym feeling swole every training session.
